Popular sports in the 1500s

Post  peter on Mon Nov 08, 2010 12:36 am

Although so much was going on during the 1500s, The Europeans still had time for sports. The English government thought people should spend more time working than playing games and banned ordinary people from playing tennis, dice, cards, bowls and skittles. The sports at that time were much different than todays. They kept some sports from the middle ages such as jousting. Only upper classes were allowed to take part in jousting tournaments. Nobles were the only ones who could hunt stags. They also played football but it was much different and the goalposts were a mile apart. You could kick throw or pick up the ball and try to get it into the goal post. The modern games have gotten way more complex with more rules. Much better than the games 500 years ago.

I would bet that if the government had actually allowed their people to participate in recreational sports or events then a lot of the riots and out breaks would not have happened (A good example would be the Colosseum in ancient Rome)
