First Punic War

The first Punic War was based on Rome wanting to gain more power. They saw Carthage as a threat, and wanted to conquer because that way they could gain power of all the Mediterranean and conquer Sicily, which is an island with a good source of grain. After fighting for a while. Carthage signed a treaty that says the Sicily is a province of Rome. Rome also ended up conquering Corsica and Sardinia.

Nice work! The romans wanted to conquer Carthage for two reasons. First is, as you said, the access to Mediterranean, and the second one is a valuable source of grain.Rome built navy in order to defeat the Carthaginians.
