Wilson, Clemenceau, and Lloyd George

Post  Joshua T on Mon May 04, 2015 2:19 pm

On January 19th, 1919 the Paris Peace Conference was held in the Palace of Versailles. The victors of World War I met here to discuss the consequences of the Triple Alliance. Woodrow Wilson was the president of the United States of America. He was probably the most idealistic man. He wanted to create a conference of nations so that atrocities like WWI could be avoided. Wilson also wanted nations to establish democratic governments. Clemenceau was the French Premier. He came into the conference with the goal to get national security from Germany because he believed that German aggression was the factor that affected his people/country the most. He also wanted Germany to pay reparations. David Lloyd George was the newly elected prime minister of Great Britain. He came into the conference with one goal. This goal was to make Germany pay up for all of the damage that the war caused. Wilson, Lloyd George, and Clemenceau had to compromise. It was impossible for everyone to get what they wanted. On June 28th, 1919, Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles. If they did not sign, Germany would loose all of their trading contacts. It stated that Germany was guilty for starting the war; Germany had to pay up for all of the damage that the war caused; and Germany had to destroy their navy, cut their military size down to 100,000. and cut off their air force. By Germany signing this, Clemenceau was granted with some security from Germany by forcing them to cut down their military, Lloyd George got Germany to pay up for the war. Later on, a league of nation was created. This granted part of Wilson wish.

All three of those men went into that meeting with their own goals to achieve. However, not all of their wishes could be granted therefore they made an agreement and basically they all went against Germany. This then later was the cause to other world problems that lead to World War 2.
