The Second Punic War

Post  Roberta2000 on Thu Mar 26, 2015 5:04 pm

The second Punic War started when both, Romans and Carthaginians, wanting Saguntum, which is in modern day Spain. Saguntum belonged to Carthage and when Rome wanted it the Carthaginian general, Hannibal, decided to attack Rome. Hannibal and his troops crossed the Alps to get to Rome. Hannibal took elephants with him, which was just incredible. At the start, Hannibal was winning every war, but by the time he and his troops were getting close to the city of Rome they didn’t have enough Soldiers. Because of this reason the Carthaginians lost the Second Punic War.

Roberta what you written about the Second Punic War was really good, because you mention the battle between Carthage and Rome. The other thing that I read was that you mention was winning all the battles until Carthage needed more reinforcements and siege equipment. Something that you could have mention is that how Hannibal the leader of Carthage sent a messenger to his brother but it was trap and the Rome were lead to Hannibal brothers were they killed him and his head was sent to Hannibal. At last you what you have done is good. Very Happy

Great job, Roberta! Very true facts, I mean, Hannibal took elephants with him and most of them were killed when they were passing the mountains, due to the cold. Now, those elephants are extinct, sadly, but there is nothing we can do about it. The Second Punic War is the most memorable one and the most known/biggest of the three. Anyways, great job!

Great work Roberta!! I really liked how you organized your ideas. This was a very interesting topic great work Roberta!. Rome wanted Carthage for two reasons and this happened in the first Punic war. the reasons were:
1) allowed them to control the Mediterranean with their navy.
2) Valuable sources of grain especially from the island Sicily.

Good job! In the second punic war Hannibal brought over the Alps 40,000 infantry, 8,000 cavalry, and 60 elephants.
He was so close to victory, but he've never got reinforcements to be able to beat Romans.
