The Guillotine

Post  Alicia M. on Mon Mar 02, 2015 9:10 am

The Guillotine is a killing machine introduced to France by Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotine, in the 1790s. The guillotine was created to make an instant and painless death. His idea about its use was to eliminate the public torture and pain. In 1789, new rules were applied to the use of this tool: identical death for all convicts, one death condemned, and punishment for the condemned man alone. A French code of 1791 stated “every man condemned to death will have his head cut off.” Every time someone was going to be guillotined, the crowed gathered around to attend the execution. The guillotine had become a bloody symbol of the French revolution due to its efficiency in killing; it was secure, clean, fast, and as they say, painless. The crowd was aloud to say if the death was made properly and fast. At the beginning, the machine was tested on cheeps and other animals. With those testing they improved it and then used it for humans. the last execution ever done in France was in Marseille, on September 1977.

I think it really ironic that Guillotine invented the guillotine and then got killed by it. He got way crazy and too obsessive with killing people.

I wonder if it really was painless... it could be possible that the victim is still conscious for a few seconds after decapitation, for some sources say they saw the victim blink or twitch. Either way, I really hope it was painless and an instant death (for the brain as well). What is sad is that Dr. Guillotine created this contraption to lessen the torture and pain in society, but it ended up making France even more violent. People got too used to seeing death and didn't even flinch when hearing someone's spine snap, head roll into the basket, and blood spray over the razor. Good job Smile
