Industrial Revolution: The beginning

Post  CicelyS on Tue Feb 24, 2015 11:07 am

In the late 18th century, a revolution slowly began in the United Kingdom. The name of this revolution was the Industrial Revolution, known for introducing new machinery and the factory system we all know today. Before the times of machines and electronics, the way to create textiles was through the cottage industry, in which singular, independent families would create textiles by hand and then ship them off to be sold. This was replaced by the factories that are so popular in this day and age. The revolution took place in Britain due to the fact that they had the natural resources to make it easy to sustain the revoultion suhc as money, iron and coal.
One of the first textile machines to be created was the spinning jenny, a very basic invention, yet it provoked many more inventions to come. Due to the new machinery, urbanization occured and low pay jobs became the norm. This meant that many people still in the rural areas lost a lot of money. This was solved with the enclosure movement, in which those who owned the land in the country side fenced off their land which forced the peasants living there to move to the city to get money and the land owners earned more money. Although this revolution was very important and forms the life we know now, it came with many downsides. First, child labor became very popular. Children were easy to manipulate and one doesn't have to pay them nearly as much. The kids were small so they could easily get to places adults could not, in mines and factories. Another downside was the polution and overpopulation. Before the revoultion, cities had hardly any people and when urbanization took place, cities were not equiped to deal with the amount of people pouring in. This meant that ghettos were formed and many people lived in unhygenic places. This was only the beginning of the revolution though. Later on, in America and other countries, more inventions emerged, such as cars and more modern machinery. This marked the second part of the Industrial Revolution.

The industrial revolution was a turning point in history. The industrial revolution is the reason why we are so technologically advanced today. This was the first step of the millions that would come with great inventions and innovations.

It is sad to think that such a great time period in history - one defined by the modernization of the world - was accompanied by such cruelties and times of depression. I feel like it fits the quote, "Before there can be a rainbow, there must first be rain."

Like every thing, the Industrial Revolution has positive and negative sides. Obviously one of the most positive things is that there were new and very important inventions that still have a great impact on us nowadays. Something else is also that any work of creating things was made faster and in a greater quantity. Something really negative though was that all the peasants that worked for landowners in rural area had to move to cities because they started fencing their lands since they had machines to do the work for the peasants. Peasants had to look for jobs in urban areas to work in factories, which led to urbanization. Another negative aspect of the revolution is the beginning of child labor. Kids were forced to to harsh and long work in order to maintain their family. The conditions of work were very dangerous, it was unfair because they didn't get paid much and many kids died because of the conditions. It was a great and horrible period in history.
