Horrors Hidden in the Murky Depths of River Loire...

It is hard to imagine this beautiful lake was once the nightmare of thousands of French citizens, but unfortunately, it is true. These gentle waves swallowed thousands of lives as they slowly suffocated to death.

When the Reign of Terror began after Louis XVI's death, the Jacobins took control. While some were vary of their radical ways, undoubtedly most were thrilled at the idea of an entirely new system built by members of the third estate. Originally, the Jacobins were supporters of human rights and the end of torture. Of course, as it is rumored, up until the vicious leader Maximilliam Robespierre began to lose his mind, and the Reign of Terror engulfed France. For the radical group, death was the answer to eliminating all opponents of their cause. However, Robespierre took it to an entirely new level when he ordered the complete extermination of entire cities which he deemed worthy of suspicion. Not only were whole towns burnt down, but every member was shot and brutally thrown into unmarked graves.

The drownings first started when shooting civilians became too slow, and the Robespierre required a quicker approach that didn't include using an innumerable amount of costly ammunition. Jean-Baptiste Carrier, the republican representative of Nantes, was incredibly dedicated to this cause. During the summer of 1793, he ordered the drowning of hundreds of previous clergy members. The executions were successful, and the new method soon became common practice. Thousands of French men, women, and children lost their lives while being herded onto specially designed rafts that were later upturned in river Loire. In fact, the sheer number of death bodies decaying in the water caused the river to be contaminated and proclaimed a health hazard!

The Republican Marriage was a form of added humiliation for the victims. The practice included tying men and women together after beings striped naked, before being tied to a heavy rock and drowned in the river. Carrier came up with the Republican Marriage when he was attempting to think up a new was to break clergy members. He deemed having priests and nuns, tied together naked, to be satisfactory. He called the drownings one of the, "Finest moments of the Revolution!" During these terrors of the French Revolution, not only adults but children lost their lives as well, gasping for breath as water filled their lungs. It certainly is difficult to believe such horrors are hidden in the murky depths of the beautiful river Loire...

This post was almost hard to read. Robespierre must have been a very brutal, unforgiving man to have commited such crimes. It's so sad to hear that he could kill so many people so easily. He worked for a good cause, just not in the right ways.

Seriously Mira, you write the best post topics, they are so interesting. Yeah I agree with Cicely and Joshua, he was really brutal. Why did he even want to kill almost the whole population, like what was the point of it?
