The Estates-General of 1789

The Estates-General of 1789 was composed of 3 different estates. The First Estate was composed of the clergy. The Second Estate was composed of the nobles. The Third Estate was composed of the common people. It was the first time that the three estates were meeting since 1614. The Third Estate was the hardest working estate. They were the poorest estate. They were the only estate that had to pay taxes. They were the estate that had to do all the dirty work. They were the estate that was paid the least. They were the estate that composed 97% of France. The Third Estate went into the Estates-General wanting to change this.  The First and Second Estates were happy in the positions that they were in. They didn’t want to do any work and they wanted to have all the privileges. At the Estates-General each estate had one vote. This was unfair for the Third Estate. The First and Second Estate combined to form 2 votes. The Third Estate was on their own and they only had 1 vote. No matter what the Third Estate wanted. They were always outvoted. The Third Estate tried to change the voting system, but it had no effect because each estate had 300 votes. So when the first and second estate combined they had 600 votes. The third estate was on their own and had 300 votes. The day ended with no resolutions for the Third Estate and Louis locked the meeting room because he believes that they will get nothing done and that they are just wasting money.

It's so sad to think that Louis didn't stand up for the rights of the third estate. It isn't fair for one, large group of people not to have the same rights than a smaller group of people just because of money. If louis had had the courage to do what is right, he may not have had to die when the revolution took hold of France.
