The Storming of the Bastille

Post  Sarah Marti Roy on Tue Feb 03, 2015 6:36 pm

On July 14, 1789, the mob (sans-culottes), joined by some of the Kings soldiers, stormed the Bastille. The Parisian mob was able to get a hold of 3000 rifles and a few canons. They went to Bastille in search for more weapons and ammunition. At the front of the prison, there was one guard by the of de Launay. He attempted to surrender but the mob killed him and placed his head on a spear and carried him with them on their journey. Inside there were 30 Swiss guards and 85 Invalides, by the time the mob had stormed the Bastille, all the guards had been killed. The seven prisoners were were being kept in the prison had been released. The Bastille prison was a symbol of the corrupt system by the monarchy because the seven prisoners had been locked up by the queen or king. They locked seven of the people who didn't agree with their decisions. The storming was a way to symbolize the end of the monarchy.

I think that the storming of the Bastille represents the symbol of strength and courage. The mob was extremely angry and hungry so they were really violent. And as you mentioned Sarah, it is a symbol of the end of the monarchy, which was a really big deal. It is still celebrated each year the 14th of July, there many people celebrating in the streets and the military marches in the streets of Paris. It is an unforgettable date in France's history. Keep the good work Sarahhh! Smile

Great post! I think the violence people showed when storming the Bastille should have alerted the clergy and nobility (and the King) that the third estate had had enough. They were out for blood and wouldn't be stopped... Yet the King still didn't make a change. It is sad that France had to go through so much before they could finally have their happy ending. Executing the royal family wasn't enough, for when King Louis died came the Rein of Terror. Tens of thousands of people had to die before the French could start a new life - without so much torture and death.

The Bastille

The bastille was absolutely destroyed by the rebels against the king. They stole all the ammunition and then they took the bastille apart block by block.
