The Reign of Terror

Post  Romane D. on Tue Feb 03, 2015 6:29 pm

Louis XVI died in 1793, which is when the reign of terror began. The first victim was Marie Antoinette because she was put into jail with her children. The guillotine was a new instrument that was created during the French Revolution to kill anyone who went against the king. It was said that it was the best way to kill people because it was painless. This time, instead of killing the people who were against the King or the kind of government, this time the terror was to fight the enemies of the revolution, which would include the clergy and the nobles. The public execution were considered educational; in the entire country 30,000 people were killed. Here is a quote that was said by Maximilien Robespierre.
"Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexibleā€¯
Maximilien Robespierre

What can you tell me about the reign of terror?

Children had toys that were mini-guillotines, with which the kids cut off their dolls' heads. These toys eventually lost their popularity when people said it had negative psychological affects. Toys that cut off doll heads? That is past wrong. It sounds horrifying, but then again, today we have video games where the point is shooting other people... I wonder what kind of affect seeing so much violence (in movies, games, etc.) has on our generation.

In my opinion, the French Revolution certainly glorified death and accostumed both the young and the old to the brutal ways of execution. It was deffinitely influential to the attitude toward killing we have today in the video games (as Mira mentioned) and movies. Great post!

During the reign of terror nobles were being executed for being who they were. When the reign of terror ended, the execution of the nobles stopped. The reign of terror ended with execution of Robespierre.
