French Revolution

Post  aubrie.g on Sun Feb 01, 2015 8:50 pm

France's population was split into three estates:
The first estate- Clergy (Roman Catholic)
The second estate- nobles (those born into money)
The third estate- commoners; bourgeoisie (this included urban workers, and peasants)

The first and second estates had far more privileges than the third estate. These privileges included no taxation. There are many reasons for the French Revolution, but there is one main reason. Unfair taxation, and the third estates inability to maintain the entire French economy. Although France had helped aid in the American Revolution, they had fought many wars against Britain, and the unreasonable spending by the king and queen. There could have possibly been a way to fix the problem, before it caused complete chaos.

What do you believe they (France) could have done to fix the economy before it failed?

I think that the king could have taken more power in his hands and fixed the taxes. He could have made everyone pay taxes and take privileges away from the clergy and nobles.

That's a really interesting question Aubrie, to be honest if I was the king I would have never put my country in such a difficult position. I would have simply made it more fair for the the three estates. I would make the first and second estate have a bit less privileges and make them pay taxes. For the third estate they would still pay taxes but not as much and they will have the same privileges as the first and second estate. Great topic Aubrie Very Happy

The first and second estates were clearly taking advantage of the hard working third estate. Issues kept on accumulating until the third estate decided it was enough. Not to forget, the third estate made up 97% OF FRANCES POPULATION.

Had I been the king, I would have fixed things during the Estates General. My first step would have been to accept the conditions of the third estate - conditions which were completely reasonable. Hopefully, that would elude the third estate's anger -at least for the time being - and I could work on easing the first and second estates into giving up some of their privileges. Nice question Smile
