Marathon

Post  David Strauss on Fri Jan 30, 2015 10:04 am

Marathon was called a marathon because after the 1st Persian War Pheidippides was told to deliver a message to Athens. The message was to tell them that they have won the battle and that they mike come for another attack. This message was sent by Pheidippides which he ran 26 miles to get to Athens. Once he delivered the message all sweaty and out of breath, he then died. That is why we do a marathon with 26 miles to commemorate the day Pheidippides saved Greece. Very Happy

The Marathon was only 26 miles away from Athens and because of it, the marathons we run today are 26 miles. Phidippides was a person who ran it and when he got to Athens, he died because he was very very tired. At least, he had the chance to give the people of Athens the message before passing away.
