Financial Crisis

Post  ebznski on Mon Jan 26, 2015 2:57 pm

All throughout France there were major money issues. Where was all this money going? It was going into the pockets of the clergy and the nobility. Although the king knew about this problem, and he knew how to fix it, he did not do anything about it because he did not want to displease those that were rich. However, when the king had lost most of his power and the national assembly was created they were able to solve this in a rather harsh yet fast way. Although it was not a long term solution it was able to pay of most of Frances dept. The First thing that they did was to take away the land of the church. The National Assembly forced the clergy members off the land and made them swear and oath to the new constitution. Another thing they did was create the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, this document stated they the Church had officially come under the control of the state.

In my opinion, the king was weak not to have stood up for what was right. maybe if he had been a better person, the French Revolution wouldn't have happened, and things would have ended happily for his family. Great post though

What a Spineless Coward!

Post  Mira W. on Thu Jan 29, 2015 8:06 pm

King Louis XVI was a spineless coward, to say it plainly. He let the clergy and nobility get too comfortable, and when this lead to problems, he didn't fight them. Of course they would argue to stay in their luxurious, glamorous life, but as King he should have stepped up and made a change! This lifestyle and system had be going on for centuries, true -- but that was no excuse for Louis to be so utterly incapable as a ruler. His country needed him and he simply let everyone push him around. Then again, it helped fire up the nation, which lead to the French Revolution. Had he done differently, though, maybe Robespierre wouldn't have gained power and destroyed the population... Good job on the post.
