Causes of the French Revolution

Post  ebznski on Thu Jan 15, 2015 10:40 pm

There were several causes to the beginning of the French Revolution, and all of them were more important than just a small thing that the kind did once. They were all dramatically effecting the well-being of the citizens of France as well as France itself. For starters, France's king Louis XVI was a frustratingly indecisive king who spent lavishly on things that he did not even need and wanted to keep the richest people, those that he was closest with, as happy as possible and not have to make any large/important decisions.
France was divided into three Estates: First (clergy), Second (nobles), and Third (everyone else). Although most of France was a part of the Third Estate this was the group that had the short end of the stick. They were poor, had no privileges, and were unimportant to the First and Second state. However, all of France would not be able to run had it not been for them because they were the only ones paying the nation and working for the nation (providing its people with food, goods, etc.).
The Third Estate was the only Estate out of all three that was required to pay taxes to the nation even though they were broke and could not afford it. However, when they would try to do something about this it was always impossible because of the voting system that France had set up.
In France at that time each Estate had one vote meaning that the Third Estate couldn't do anything. This was because the First and Second Estates wouldn't want to make the changes that the Third Estate wanted because it would require them to give up some of their money/privileges, so both of these Estates would make up the two votes that were required to overrule the Third Estates demands.
But one day the king decided to have an Estate-General (meeting of all the Estates) so that they could solve all of these problems. However, when the Third Estate made its demands the king did not want to make the First or Second Estates angry with him so he pretended that the meeting had never happened and decided to leave things as it was.

This one act by the king had truly started the Revolution because it made the people of the Third Estate realize that their king would not do anything about their current situation, he, in fact, refused to.

It was incredibly unfair the fact that the poorest estate was the one that had to suffer the most during this time. The French Revolution occurred in 1789 and another reason why the revolution occurred was because Louis XVI spent an incredible amount of money to build one of the biggest palaces in Europe called Versailles, and his wife Marie Antoinette also spent an incredible amount of money buying herself new dresses and jewelry. They were so selfish and heartless because they didn't seem to care at all about everything that was going one with basically the biggest percent of the French population. They had nothing to eat and could barely afford anything because they were the ones that had to pay the taxes. Interesting topic Elizabeth, kept it upp thumbs up

wow, its crazy and completely unfair for the French people to have a king who would use the countries money for himself and his wife. I wonder how France would be if he did not build the palace like he did and Maria (his wife) did not spend so much money on clothes. Would have the French Revolution occur?

It was incredibly unfair how their social structure was made. As you mentioned in your blog, the Third estate was the only one who had to pay taxes. They made 97% of the population and only had 65% of the land. many unfair decisions were made at the time but later on they managed too get out of this horrible time. Great post by the way What a Face

One of the reasons the French revolution had occurred was because of Loius XVI was inducible. For that I blame his childhood. The parent pay attention to his brother that died at age 9. And then he was made a king at age 11 when both of his parents had died.

I wonder why it became this way; I mean, I wonder how the three estates began. When did the common working-class allow the clergy and nobility to push them down so much? Why did they let it happen in the first place? There must have been a beginning, when the king first started making absurd demands, such as a long list of taxes. This again shows how greedy human nature is... we'll lift ourselves up even if it means stepping on other people's shoulders. Either way, I'm glad that they fought back, even though later it went horribly wrong and the Reign of Terror began.

97% of the population came from the third estate. How unfair is that! The third estate was the hardest working estate and yet they still had to pay taxes. Second and First estates were taking advantage of the third estate. How unfair is that!
