The Three Estates

Post  Belinda K. on Wed Jan 14, 2015 7:24 pm

In France the population was divided in three groups: The First Estate, The Second Estate, and The Third Estate. The First Estate was better known as the Clergy, which contained mostly of rich and some poor people. The Clergy population was about 130,000 out of 27 million people and owned 10% of the land. The Second Estate, also known as the Nobility, they consisted their titles and got their wealth from the tax they collected from the common people and the land. The nobles population was about 350,000 out of 27 million people and owned 25-30% of the land. And the Third Estate, known as the common people didn't have as much privileges as the first and second estates, they where the major part of the population and did all the hard work. The Third Estate had to pay taxes while the other Estates didn't.

voting

Its so unfair for the 3rd estate to have the most people and still be counted as one vote. I would also go against the government and fight, so the voting would be by head and not by estate.

It's sad that the Third Estate had to deal with all of these burdens but couldn't change anything about their situation because of the un equal voting that was decided by the government.

The revolution should have occurred earlier. It not okay for third estate to be the largest population and for their votes not to count. The king wasn't helpful at all in any kind of way.

I agree! Louis XVI seems like such an incapable ruler... he really didn't realize that there would be a revolution. I wouldn't believe it, but then again, he did think putting a lock on the Estate General's meeting room would fix his issues. I also agree that the revolution should have happened earlier, it is astounding that for decades people of the third estate endured these conditions.

it so unfair that the third estate had to deal with everything, they had to work, and pay taxes while the other estates had nothing to worry about, the third estate at one point could not even buy bread

I think that it was so unfair for the 3rd estate because they had no privileges and they were the ones who were payed the least and yet they payed all the taxes. On the other hand, there was the clergy that had all the privileges and they had to pay no taxes. It is unfair and cruel. The 3rd estate was hungry and all they basically had was bread. All the taxes that the 3rd estate was used in maintaining the palace and also all the money they spent in furnitures and cloth. This is what led to the French Revolution, everyone was mad, angry, and starving. Good topic!
