Causes of the American Revolution

Post  ebznski on Mon Dec 01, 2014 10:26 pm

The American Revolution did not happen on just a spur of patriotism (though that was one cause), it was provoked by the British. The first thing that the British did was when they made the 13 Colonies be run by a government that wasn't even in one of the colonies, it was thousands of miles away in England. However, the British did put their soldiers in the colonies to watch over them, and because of the tension imposed by these soldiers, in 1770 the Boston Massacre occurred (actually only killed four people).Earlier in 1765 the British put the Stamp Act on the Colonies which was when the British put taxes on certain printed goods that were bought by everybody everyday. This money, however, was not spent on the Americans, it was spent making the British become more wealthy and powerful. However, after the Americans revolted against this it was taken away and replaced by the Townshed Act which put taxes on even more goods, the British had taxed almost every item a normal person would need to live. Because of these high taxes a group of men called the Sons of Liberty sneaked onto a British ship dumping all of the taxed tea into the Boston Harbor, this was called the Boston Tea Party.

As Sarah said, very descriptive topic. It wasn’t fair for the Americans because they had to pay a lot of taxes and the only reason why Britain wanted to obtain the colonies was to get money and they actually didn’t care about the Americans. I believe they were right to get independent and they deserved it. Great topic.

Really good post Elizabeth! Did you know that The Americans were influenced by John Locke's ideas. He argued that if citizens don't agree with the government, or they feel that they abuse of their power, they have the duty to overthrow that government and make a better one. This is the case of the American Revolution when they didn't agree on the British's laws and way of govern.
