the geocentric model vs. the heliocentric model

Post  Gloria H. on Mon Nov 24, 2014 3:36 pm

The geocentric model was developed thousands of years ago by the Greek philosophers. It was known as the model of the Solar System for centuries. The word itself (geocentric) means earth centered. The Greeks and the people until the 17th century believed that the earth was the center of the universe, that all the planets, the sun, and the moon orbited them. This model is also called the Ptolemaic system in honor of the Greek scientist and philosopher, Claudius Ptolemy. The idea of the heliocentric model had been around since 200 BC, but never really caught anybody’s eye; no one thought it could be true, until the 16th century. Heliocentric which means sun centered replaced the geocentric model. This system placed the sun in the center and the earth and other planets orbiting the sun. This was mainly brought into interest by Nicolas Copernicus (1473–1543) and mathematically confirmed by Johannes Kepler (1571–1630).

Today, thanks to the scientific revolution, we know the truth about everything. In the past, people had a complete opposite way of looking at the universe and its concepts. I am glade this revolution happened, or else our knowledge about the universe would be a lie. Even though many discoveries are still to be made, we know a lot more than we did before the scientific revolution.

The hello centric model gives us a perfect idea of how our solar system works and before they were wrong because people believed in the geocentric model which was completely wrong. It was proved wrong when Nicolaus Copernicus tested the hypothesis that the earth was the one orbiting around the sun; it was called the heliocentric theory. His new plan still included a lot of aspects of the ancient theory. He finished the description of his heliocentric theory in De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium, which was published in 1543. This has helped many scientists or astronomers because if the heliocentric theory hadn’t been discovered, they would have no idea how our solar system would function. Great topic gloria keep it up! Very Happy
