abortion in the Dominican Republic

Post  Gloria H. on Mon Nov 24, 2014 3:34 pm

The law:
"The right to life is inviolable from the moment of conception and until death."

Abortion in the DR is completely illegal, there is no exception, For example in other countries around the world like Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay, there is exceptions such as in case it could cause death to the women, to the offspring or the parent will not be able to give a good life to the child. With such strict laws in place, every year, thousands of Dominican women either induce abortions themselves or visit an illegally equipped place where people will make the abortion possible, although these processes are very dangerous and if caught put into jail, there is estimation of 900,000 illegal abortion a year in the DR. The reasons for this include the strong influence of religion, as well as the lack of sexual education for the country’s youth. The results are unwanted pregnancies, mainly in young teenage Dominican women, who then risk their physical health, sometimes even their lives for either having the baby and their bodies are still not developed to have an offspring, or having an illegal abortion.

Opposing side: (against abortion)

Abortion is not murder because the fetus is attached to the mother, if the mother dies so will the fetus, it is apart of her. Apart of her body until birth.

Many people believe that abortion should be legalized because, the person having the baby may not be able to handle the responsibility of a baby. many accidents happen in which women end up pregantat without concent and they have no choice than to have the baby or have an illegal ibortion.
Many people say that abortion is not murder if you do it before the fetus has developed a life in which is could sustain out of the mothers belly. Doctors in other countries belive that abortion would not be murder if the women is nine weeks into the pregnancy, if more doctors will not go throught with the process.

The society’s president, Aldrian Almonte, said the current figure of 160 deaths for each 100,000 live births per year will increase. There fore if abortion were to be legal than the number will decrease instead of increasing.

Support:
The church not only supports the law in which abortion is illegal, but made sure it is acted upon in the Dominican Republic. The initiative was backed by Roman Catholic activists and introduced by President Leonel Fernández as Proposal 21. Dr. Milton Cordero began working with abortion in the country’s public hospitals with the arrival of an international organization named Engenderhealth in 1980. The church states that abortion is murder. Abortion it self means to stop (abort) the life.
The Church teaches, "Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end.
People try to say that the baby isn't alive and it's totally unaware. But in reality its heart and brain are the first things to develop. Not only does the baby die but the mother feels the loss. This should automatically tell you there is something wrong with abortion.

This is a very interesting and controversial topic. Although I do agree that it is better not to abort, as you could always give your baby to a couple who cannot have children, women should have the choice concerning the matter. It is them, after all, who will not only have to raise, but feed and cloth the child as well. If the government bans abortion, they should either a) provide the mother with funding, or b) create a law forcing the father to take part in raising and supporting the child. It does take two to make a life, therefore it is unfair that only the women are responsible to carry the consequences of their actions. Interesting post! Smile

I believe that abortion gives us a chance to correct our mistakes. Is it something u should just do every now and then? No. But it gives us a chance, because if we are too young and can't do our own things how do expect us to carry about a baby. Although if you start sleeping around you should be mature enough.

when writing this i never really thought about what the government should do apart from making it legal, but its true about making the father have part in the raise of the child
