Purple Dye

Post  Francisco Jimenez on Sun Oct 12, 2014 8:13 pm

A nickname for the purple dye the Phoenicians made is "Royal Purple", because the process of extracting the dye from the Murex was so difficult and it took so long to make, and the fact that it was very expensive, thats why the wealthy were the only people who could afford cloth covered in purple dye.

Francisco this is an interesting topic it is, because you mention how the Phoenicians called the purple dye, “Royal Purple”. As well how you mention that extracting the dye from the Murex shell was difficult. Another thing is that it was actually a reddish purple that was produced by certain types of predatory sea snails. Something that you may have added was that this purple dye was a good semiconductor. Very Happy

The Famous Purple Dye

Post  Ophirkes on Mon Oct 13, 2014 8:15 pm

Well done, Francisco! I love the way you explained exactly what purple dye is and what is was used for. It’s very true, indeed, only the rich could afford this dye because it was so hard to get. If you think of it, now a days, purple dye is just another color and almost all people can afford it. Look what evolution brought us to!

Nice Job Francisco!!!
This is a good topic, it was well explained and they did get very wealthy because of the muex shell and thay wer the ones that knew where to find it. Also i wonder if they still make pain with that shell or if they use different chemicals for it.
That would be intersting to know.

Good topic! You are right, purple dye was an expansive product, so thats why only wealthy people were able to wear purple clothes. The Phoenicians were trading this dye all around the world, and it was a popular good, which everyone wanted and needed.

Great topic!! The murex shells were soled by the Phoenicians to many wealthy Egyptians. It was mostly the kings and queens that wore it because they had enough money to afford it. Basically, if you owned anything with purple dye, you have to be pretty rich. Very interesting topic.
