Martin Luther

Post  Alicia M. on Sun Sep 28, 2014 6:09 pm

Martin Luther was a monk in the Catholic Church and a professor at the university of Wittenberg, in Germany, where he lectured on the bible. Through his study of the bible, he was able to solve a problem that had bothered him since he became a monk. Through his study, the bible became for him, and for all later Protestants, the only valid source of religious truth.
On October 31, 1517, Luther published his Ninety-five Theses, and posted them on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. His ideas and teachings spread fast, and by 1520, he began to move toward a more definite break with the Catholic Church.

It's amazing that the church didn't execute Luther. He was lucky to have gotten away with his opinions. It's interesting to think that one man could have such a giant effect of history and the church. Great post! Very Happy

Over the years people changed there ideas about Lutherism. For example, before Henry VIII was agains Lutherism, but when he wanted a divorce with Catharine and the church didn't give it to him, he changed his mind about Lutherism. Since in that religion you are allowed to get a divorce.

I wonder how our society would be if divorce wasn't accepted. Maybe people wouldn't run into marriages when they are 20, but rather consider it a bit more. It is kind of sad to think that in the US, 40 to 50% of the couples divorce. I suppose it is a good think that divorce is accepted, because it gives more job opportunities. Some people would even lose their jobs if people stopped marrying and divorcing ...

In 1517 he created a revolt against the Church, because they were making people pay indulgences! He believed it wasn't true and fair because the Bible didn't mention anything about indulgences and it wasn't fair because poor people couldn't afford being forgiven which meant that only the rich people were going to go to heaven. What he did was really brave and correct. Amazing topic aliciaa bananarama

Martin Luther fought for what he thought was right. He couldn't let Tetzle scam so many people. According to him, indulgences could not be bought. The bible never said anything about buying indulgences. Indulgences have to be earned through a good life.
