Bizarre war: The Paraguayan War

Post  CicelyS on Sun Sep 28, 2014 5:40 pm

In 1864, the president of Paraguay considered Napoleon Bonaparte a huge role model. The President thought of himself as a very skilled commander and was good at tactics, but he had never lead his country to war or even participated in one. To fix this, he decided to declare war on Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Because these countries were the neighboring countries, when they went to war, Paraguay was automatically surrounded by their enemies. Due to their lack of war skills and their poor choice in opponents, Paraguay was nearly completely wiped out. It is estimated that they lost around 90% of their male population during this war. This war is said to be one of the most un-necessary wars in history because the president hardly had any cause to declare the war in the first place and it nearly cost his the country. The war lasted from 1864 to 1870.
