Indulgences

Post  ebznski on Fri Sep 26, 2014 4:49 pm

During the Renaissance people believed that if you were to give money to the Pope their soul would be saved from Purgatory. However no one ever asked or even thought about where that money could possibly be going, they just wanted their souls and the souls of their family members to be saved.People never knew that their money was being used to build the Sistine Chapel as well as paying Michelangelo to paint the ceiling. All of the money of the poor people was being used by the richest man in the world at that time to create something that benefited no one other than the future generations.
Even though the fact that indulgences are not in the Bible, because it was said by the Pope people were ready to give up their life savings. Because of this act by Tetzel, who had been selling these indulgences by the church, the Protestant Reformation had come into full swing when Luther came out with his 95 Theses against the ways of the Catholic Church and nailed them on the doors of the Church. Since these Theses were created people stopped buying indulgences from the Church and Catholicism began to decline in followers as Lutheranism, later known as Protestantism, became the most popular religion.

I think Martin Luther did the right things. He couldn't allow people to pay for their indulgences, and most of all, he couldn't allow the pope to benefit from that money. He had to teach everyone the right way to do it.

purgatory

Purgatory was like the first step of hell. The indulgences were paid by the people so their souls would have a passage to heaven and not to purgatory, but Martin Luther, did not believe in any of this due to the fact that it was not written anywhere in the bible.

The fact that the Church decided to make people pay for indulgences was totally unacceptable. Martin Luther was smart enough to know and to say that it wasn't true, because first it didn't say anything about indulgences in the bible since he new it by heart, and he also found it very unjust the fact that rich people will have bigger chances in going to heaven, while the poor people couldn't afford to be forgiven by their sins. People should've also realized that the only thing that the Church wanted was money. I really think it wasn't fair because it must've made people suffer a lot or because they thought that they would go to hell if they didn't pay or because they sacrificed so much to get money just to be forgiven. It doesn't make any sense, because in the end you don't even know what is going to happen to you once you die, and it certainly isn't by paying that you will be forgiven. Great topic elizabethh <3

According to Martin Luther, Indulgences can never be bought. It never said that in the bible. Indulgences have to be earned through a good life. Great post Elizabeth.

People is that time were so focused on living an affordable life and getting food and water for their families that the indulgences brought more stress to these people. The Church was taking money from the people who needed it the most which is just cruelty in my eyes. Just thinking that people could be so even and mean in those times scares me to think of that evolution to nowadays. Martin Luther was just opening the eyes of these people, the fact that they were saying that giving them money would free their souls once the time came is just nonsense. He opened their eyes to the truth and tried to help these people. He was a hero to many people and families.
