The Olympics Empty The Olympics

The Olympics have been around for thousands of years, and the first games we have a record of were in 777 BC. They were created by Hercules in Olympia, Greece, and took place every four years as part of a religious festival in celebration of Zeus. They were banned by a Roman emperor around 1000 years after they began, but were revived by Coubertin, a French man. Today, over 200 nations participate in these games and 13,000 athletes compete for gold, silver and bronze in one of 400 events.

Now, the summer and winter Olympics alternate every two years (so there are four years between every summer Olympics and 4 four years between every winter Olympics). There are also the Paralympics, which are held for people with disabilities, and the Youth Olympics Games.

There are many different sporting events that are hosted all over the world today, from the Olympics, which host over 400 different events, to others like Wimbledon and the World Cup which specialize in one specific sport. Sporting events like these help promote the importance of doing exercise and inspire many younger children to try and become athletes.
