Oligarchy ZThe word comes from two Greek words: 'oligos' meaning 'few', and 'archy' meaning 'rule'.)
Oligarchy is a small group of people having control of a country or organization. They are usually  rich and powerful.
A modern example is rather like South Africa during the 20th Century when a small population of white people denied access to trade and educational systems to the coloured population. This process had been going on since the mid 18th Century and later became known as 'apartheid'. This lasted until the arrival of democracy in 1994 .
The South African Apartheid government, when compared to the population of the country as a whole, was an oligarchy. Tunisia, with its effective one-party state, and power concentrated in the elite of the ruling Rassemblement Constitutionel Démocratique (RCD, Democratic Constitutional Rally) can also be considered an oligarchy.
