There are four different types of governments that exist and these different governments all have a different way of governing and ruling their country. The four different forms of government are: monarchy, oligarchy, tyranny and a democracy.

1.) Monarchy: The first type of government is the monarchy. The monarchy is where the ruling power is in the hands of one person in specific. The king gets their power by inheritance; so if their father was the king, they get to be the king when their father passes away. Early Athens was an example of a monarchy. This is a very common form of government in today's day. Most monarchies today are found in Europe; Belgium, Spain, England, Denmark, etc.

2.) Oligarchy: The next form of government is oligarchy. Oligarchy was a government in which ruling power was in the hands of several different people. There are two head people (kings) who were the ones in charge of leading the armies and political decisions in this government were made by aristocrats and selected members of the middle class. The lower class people and normal citizens in the states did not have much of a say in how the city was run. There were also ephors, who were a group of five men who were responsible for education and conduct of all citizens. In the Oligarchy, there was a council of elders too. These people decided the issues that would be presented to the assembly, who would then vote on the issues. The Spartan government was an example of an Oligarchy.

3.) Tyranny: A Tyranny was the form of government where people gained power by force. The individual with all the power was usually chosen by them killing the previous ruler. Because of this, each rule did not last very long. In the 7th century in Athens, one of the most powerful and cruel leaders came to power in a tyranny government. This man was called Draco.

4.) Democracy: The last type of government was the Democracy. Because of the short amount of time each ruler was at power in the tyranny, it led to this form of government instead. The democracy was ruled but the citizens, who voted in an assembly. Athens had this type of government for hundreds of years. Solon was the man who was known for founding the democracy in this ancient greek city-state of Athens.

Spartan's government was an oligarchy. Rome started off as a Monarchy. Over a period of time, it became a Democracy.
