The Zealots

Post  Taylor Lee on Sat Apr 05, 2014 12:04 pm

A Zealot was member of a Jewish sect noted for its uncompromising opposition to pagan Rome and the polytheism it professed. The Zealots were an aggressive political party whose concern for the national and religious life of the Jewish people led them to despise even Jews who sought peace and conciliation with the Roman authorities. A census of Galilee ordered by Rome in ad 6 spurred the Zealots to rally the populace to noncompliance on the grounds that agreement was an implicit acknowledgment by Jews of the right of pagans to rule their nation.

These basically were the Jewish people who did not obey Roman law. This caused a small uprising for several years and was part of the reason for new religion and crusification in Rome

The Zealots were very orthodox jews. They were strong believers and would not comply to the roman rules, which caused their suicide later on.

The uprising ended when the 6,000 remaining Zealots killed themselves after being surrounded by the Roman army.
