Differences between Hinduism and Buddhism

Post  CicelyS on Mon Feb 24, 2014 7:07 pm

Hinduism and Buddhism religions both originate in India and are very often confused. What many people don't know, is that these two religions are very different. They have many differences, that once you know about, set the two religions quite far apart. One of these differences is Hinduism doesn't have a founder, whereas Buddhism does. His name is Siddhartha Gautama, AKA, Buddha. Another difference would be the lack of the Caste system in the Buddhism religion. They believe that anyone can achieve Nirvana. Buddhism also doesn't believe in the amount of Gods that Hindu people do. These religions have many more differences, yet these are the ones that most people know.

Some similarities of these two religions:

Both Hinduism and Buddhism emphasize on the nature of the world and the role of karma in keeping men bound to this world and the cycle of births and deaths. They both emphasize compassion and non violence towards all living beings, they also believe in the existence of several hells and heavens or higher and lower worlds. They both believe in the existence of gods or deities on different planes, maybe not at the same extend but they both believe in gods. They believe in certain spiritual practices like meditation, concentration, cultivation of certain bhavas or states of mind. According to the Buddha, desire is the root to human suffering and the removal of this desire can help diminish suffering. Some of the Hindu texts such as the Upanishads (Isa) and the Bhagavadgita consider doing actions prompted by desire an attachment would lead to bondage and suffering and that performing actions without desiring the fruit of action would result in liberation.

Buddhism, unlike Hinduism, spread out much more, because poor or rich people could become a Buddhist and if you wanted to be a Hindu, you had to be classified in the Caste System. If you were an Hindu you just had to be nor in it and not just become one because you want to. Buddhism is more of a free religion where people can chose what they want to be or want to do, but Hinduism is more strict and you have to respect everything because or else if you don't you will just get bad karma. I would personally choose to be a Buddhist because it is more free and I feel like it makes so much more sense.

I find Buddhism a much better and realistic religion than Hinduism, but that is only in my opinion. The Hunduism are much more strict and they believe in things like gods and the cast system which we can never prove if is real or not.

Buddhism

Buddhism has only one founder. The name of the founder is Siddhartha Gautama. Buddhism is practiced all around the world. In order to become a Buddhist there are almost no rules. In order to become a Hindu, it has to be in your bloodline. More than 80% of the Indian population practiced Hinduism. Buddhism is branch from Hinduism. The all time goal of Buddhism is to achieve Nirvana.
