Animal Adaptions

Post  Joshua T on Sun Nov 17, 2013 3:08 pm

Animals live around the whole world. Even though Antarctica is freezing cold and more than 99 percent of Antarctica is covered with snow or ice sheets, animals still live there. Some animals that live in Antarctica are Polar Bears, Penguins, Blue Whales, Orcas, Elephant Seals and Leopard Seals. Some places on Earth are very hot and some are very cold. Some places on Earth have a lot of water and plants, and other places have very little water and few plants. Either way animals still find a way to live there because of adaptations.
Examples of adaptations in the deserts are Camels and Deserts Tortoises. In deserts more than 90% of the time there is wind, very strong winds. And the wind doesn’t only blow air with it; it also blows sand with it. The long eyelashes of a camel help it keep sand out of it eyes. Also Camels can open or close their nostrils so sand doesn’t go inside their nostrils and they also have hair inside and outside their ears to keep sand out. It is very rare to find a plant in the deserts that don’t have spikes. That’s why camels have very thick lips; these thick lips will make the camel feel no pain while eating the spikes. In deserts it is very hard to balance due to the fact that there is a lot of sand. Because of this camels have thicker and wider feet than the usual horses or donkeys. Most important of all, it is the rarest thing to find water in deserts, that’s why camels have big humps on their backs. These humps can store up to 40 gallons of water and fat. Desert Tortoises can live up to a year without water even though they don’t have a giant hump on their backs. For protection from animals in the deserts like Cobras, Desert Tortoises can withdraw their heads, legs, and tails into their giant shells. In order to survive the immense heat in deserts they can dig holes up to 10 ft underground and they could cover themselves up so they don’t feel the heat as much as if they were on the surface.
Now let’s talk about animals that can live in arctic conditions, these animals are Penguins and Polar Bears. Penguins have webbed feet, aero dynamical bodies, and wings that are used as flippers, these modified body parts help them swim away from predators and catch fish. A penguin has black feathers because it helps them heat up by absorbing the suns heat. They also huddle together in groups, they have a lot of fat and they have tightly packed feather that overlap to keep warm. A polar bear has white fur to help them blend with the color of the ice so they could hide from predators. Like walking on sand polar bears have wider and thicker feet, this helps them balance better on snow and while walking on ice sheets it will prevent the sheets from breaking so the polar bear doesn’t get stuck under the ice sheet and it dies because it can’t get out. Like Camels, Polar Bears can close their nostrils so when they go under water; water doesn’t go in. In order for polar bears to keep warm they have a thick layer of fur followed by a very big thick layer of pure fat.
Since the lion is at the top of the food chain in many occasions it needs to have many things that a lot of animals don’t have. Lions have a very thick layer of skin because when catching a Zebra, Zebras kick a lot and if a Zebra kicks the lion it will have no effect. Their thick skin also protects their throat in case it gets into a fight for a female. Lions have very muscled limbs so they could ambush a prey quickly and so they could capture an animal more than four times its size. Lions have rough tongues so they could just lick off the animal’s skin after the lion has killed it. A lion’s fur has a sandy color because in order to capture an animal it needs to camouflage. Lions like cats they could retract their claws. They can take them out or put them in so they could get a hold of their prey and do massive damage at the same time. All these adaptations make the lion the ultimate killer.
In order for humans to survive we have also have adapted to the environment. Our adaptations are more routine like than the way our bodies are. For example, when it’s hot we wear short pants and a tank top. When it mild, we wear jeans and a maybe a coat. When it cold, we are outfitted with fur coats, fur pants, etc. Over the years we have revolutionized by the way we look. Before we used to be hairy monkeys and now we are just monkeys with no hair. We humans have adapted to a way to be wasteful with our resources. Because of this the earth is dying and we will soon die. We will not only kill ourselves but we will also kill the entire living organism that could be found.
Animals are great creatures with interesting ways to survive. Without any of these adaptations the world wouldn’t be itself anymore. The food chains will not be the same and a lot of animals will die because of the environments natural forces.

You wrote a lot here! I also think that food chains are really important in the environment and we should keep the animals more under control, so people wouldn't kill them.

This is quite a bit that you wrote Josh. Animal adaptations are important for every type of animal. We humans are animals. We have to adapt when we do things such as move in to a new house or new neighborhood. Great topic Joshua.

I think it is incredible how some animals are made with different characteristics to be able to live in a certain place. For example polar bears have a lot of fur because of the temperature in which it lives in! Each animal should live in a safe place in which they can survive with no problem, a place in which they can adapt easily. Animals also have to move from places to places to hunt for food and to be able to survive! That was a great topic Joshua!  Very Happy
