Discovery of America

Post  Joshua T on Sun Oct 27, 2013 12:50 pm

A man named Christopher Columbus in the year 1492 discovered a new continent. He sailed from Europe to the Canary Islands with two caravels which were named La Pinta and La NiƱa. He was able to obtain a bigger caravel which was called the Nao. This boat was named La Santa Maria. The objective of the voyage was to find a new route to India to get different kinds of spices. Columbus thought that going around the world would be shorter than taking the route that the Portuguese were taking, going around the Cape of Good Hope in what now is South Africa.

When he arrived to America he first came to what today is the Bahamas. The Indians called this group of islands Guanahani, but he decided to call it San Salvador. Next he arrived to the island of Cuba. He named this island Juana after someone in Spain. The last island he discovered in his first voyage to the West Indies was la Hispaniola, present day Dominican Republic. Here he discovered a civilization full of Indians which were called Tainos. Not only that, but he had discovered gold and other goods as well. Then he returned to Spain and did a few more voyages to America where they began to work and enslave the Indians in the search for gold and other spices found in America.

GOOD JOB MAN! Remember also that he didnt actually want to reach America; he wanted to reach India, but he decided to take another route and look where he landed. I think Christopher Columbus was a smart guy because he also said the world was round, which is true. Good job Josh!

Didn't he have three boats la Pinta, La Nina y la Santa Maria? I cannot believe he killed all those Tainos, its not fair, they were there first. That was really good by the way, I liked how short, and simple yet descriptive it was. Smile

Christopher Columbus was an explorer, navigator, and colonizer. He was born in the Republic of Genoa in 1451, which is known today as Italy. Christopher died May 20, 1506. His life was a great adventure and he uncovered important things in life.

The discovery of America was a really great accomplishment. At the same time though, it was really sad because there was a lot of slavery from that point on. Eventually it lead to many great things in today's society. Christopher Columbus sure did do a great job on discovering America. Great Job Josh!
