The Israelites

Post  Joshua T on Thu Oct 17, 2013 7:52 pm

The Israelites differ from all the other Mediterranean civilizations. The main difference was that they were monotheistic. Monotheistic means that they only believed in one god. This happened one day when an old wise man named Abraham wanted to have a child with his wife. The only problem was that his wife was too old. Days after, he had a conversation with god and god told him that he will give him a child if he promises to worship him only. Not only will Abraham get to have a child but he will be protected for his entire life. Abraham agreed so he became monotheistic. The very next day his wife became pregnant. God told Abraham to go to another land where you will find people who will also believe in only one god. During the journey god tested Abraham faith by telling him to sacrifice his own child to him. Abraham took his child to the top of a mountain told him to close his eyes and held a knife to his throat. God told him to stop right before he stabbed his son and god told Abraham to let his child go and that he has gained his trust. After this test god game Abraham the Ten Commandment engraved on a rock. The Ten Commandments were:
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

I really liked how you put it in the old language, if i am right? I still think we should follow at least 9 of them because maybe some people believe in more than one god.
Abraham was a Egyptian slave before, wasn't he? And also it was kind of weired since Abraham and his wife lived until 150 years old.

Wow joshua, thats alot of information that you included in you topic! It's really good. I want to add a little bit more of information about the Isrealite's religion, was that their holy book was called the Torah, and I think that you already mentioned that Abraham was their forefather. Also, it was really important for them to believe in only one god, it was like the only religion that did that. Keep it up josh! Very Happy
