What were some contributions of the geography to Egypt's development?

Post  Joshua T on Fri Oct 11, 2013 1:08 pm

Egypt's development relied a lot on geography. The Egyptians learnt how to use the geography that surrounded them to their advantage. The Egyptians were located next to the Nile River. The Nile River would have yearly floods and when these yearly floods occurred, the rushing waters of the Nile River would wash out all the old and used soil and it would replace it with fresh fertile soil. This would allow the Egyptians to farm at a constant pace throughout the year and have a surplus of food in case of an emergency. The Egyptians were protected by the geography that was around them. To the North they had the Mediterranean Sea, to the South they had the rapids of the Nile River, to the East they had the Red Sea, and to the East and West they had desserts. This would make the journey for the civilization that wanted to invade Egypt very hard and tiring. Once they got there they would be tired and dehydrated. Since the Nile River flowed through Ancient Egypt, it was used as a transportation method. When the Egyptians traveled from South to North they used the currents of the Nile River. When they traveled from North to South the Egyptians used sails.

Unlike other civilizations the Egyptians knew exactly when the annual flooding was going to happen. Like you said they used it to their advantage by digging dams that led to fields used for agriculture.

As well as protection their surrounding geography have them a sense of security and harmony.

Without the Nile River, Egypt would not be the way it is today. They would have never accomplished anything they did without it and it supported lives for so many people in Egypt especially during that time. Imagine how their life would be without the river. Its crazy how one small bit of their geography can change a whole lot of their history, life, etc.
