The Phoenicians

Post  Joshua T on Sun Oct 06, 2013 7:11 pm

The Phoenicians were an eastern mediterranean civilization. They were located on what is known today the eastern coast of Lebanon. They relied on their trade routes across the Mediterranean. The Phoenicians are known to be sea people. They traded as far as the United Kingdom. Some historians believe that the Phoenicians reached as far as South Africa. I don't believe it because the conditions to travel to southern Africa would have been to harsh and the weather and ocean conditions would not be in favor. The Phoenicians were great ship builders. They built ships out of wood that could carry up to 70-100 people. They invented a sail which allowed them to travel without using oars. Since their sails couldn't be tilted or turned they had to always rely on the wind or currents of the ocean. The Phoenicians had to watch out for pirates when sailing because their ships were full of valuable good. Some of the things that the Phoenicians traded were purple dye, salt, and oil.

Like you said the Phoenicians were great ship builders. Not only were they very skilled but they built the best ships and no other civilization at that time could be compared to them in this aspect. Their ships were also known to have the carving of different animals in the front.
