Ancient Sumer

Sumer is known to be the world's oldest civilization. To be a civilization the city, or village had to have six traits. The six traits were religion, government, advanced cities, architecture/art, writing, and social structures. Sumer had all of them. Sumer was located in Mesopotamia, in between two rivers the Tigris River and the Euphrates River. These rivers would occasionally overflow. When these rivers overflowed they would fertilize all the soil. Thats why Sumer had a lot of surplus. There were many city states that fought against each other. Ur and Uruk are examples of city states located in Sumer. Sumerians were the first to invent writing. The Sumerians wrote in cuneiform. Not every Sumerian knew how to write. In order to become a writer you had to undergo a course of twelve years. When you completed that course you would be known as a scribe. A scribe is a Sumerian writer. Scribes wrote with a stylus on clay.
