The middle ages

This period took place between the fall of the Roman empire and the rise of the renaisance. People refer to this time period as the Dark ages, because no major scientific or artistic accompishment was made, not even a great leader was born. After the fall of Rome, Europe was not united, and the máximum power was given to the catholic church. Most of the kings and Queens had power because of their alliances with the church. All citizens in Europe, had to give 10 percent of their earnings to the church, who didnt have top ay any taxation.

At the same time, the islamic world was growing bigger, and at its height, was 3 times bigger than the Christian kingdom. This islamic kingdom, was a lot more artistic than the catholic, they wrote thousands of books, poems and translated Greek, Iran, and iIndian lenguages into Arabic.

Toward the end of the 11th century, the church began to authorize military expeditions, called the crusades. The crusades were to make the Muslim leave the “holy land”. No one “won” the crusades, both sides actually lost, because they lost many lives.

The middle ages was a very hard time because as you said there weren’t many advancments or new ideas floating around. I didn’t find it fair that the church had so much control of the citizens. For example they had to pay ten percent of their own personal earnings and as if that wasnt enough the church did not even need to pay taxes.
