Knocker-up or Knocker-upper is the forgotten profession in England and Ireland which point was in awaking people for work. It arose at the time of industrial revolution and existed till 20th years of the 20th century. Generally used long bamboo sticks, bludgeons, canes, but sometimes to awake people of the top floors, shoted at windows with peas.It was before alarms were invited , so people could go to work on time .

Normally old people worked on knoker-apper, but sometimes for extra fee this work could be given to the local constable.
Mary Smith earned six pence in a week shooting from a tubule peas at windows of poeple to wake them up.

I wonder if that has anything to do with where the idea of using a trumpet to wake people up (like at camps) came from. It is kind of similar because it wakes many people up as apposed to an alarm on a bed stand or from your phone. Now a days, technology is so advanced that almost every single phone has an alarm. Even devices like computers and ipods have alarms. Too bad we can't automatically wake up on our own at early times.
