World War I - CAUSES AND START OF THE WAR

Longterm causes:
-Nationalism
-Imperialism
-Militarism
-Alliances

~ NATIONALISM ~
*Nation-states emerged in the XIX century
*Competition started to appear
*Own-self interest and success
*European wars were created right away when there was a conflict or problem
*Leaders wouldn't try to compromise
*Not all ethnic groups were independent
*British, Balkans, Austia-Hungary, Irish and Polish dreamed to be free nation-states

~ IMPERIALISM ~
*Competition for land was the biggest.
*That competition or fight for land overseas increased disputes and tension (Especially in Africa)

~ INDUSTRIALISM ~
*New weapons, tactics, metals, ships, technology and machines

EX: machine guns
tanks
submarines (u-boats)
zeppelins
poison gas

~ MILITARISM ~

*Aggressive preparation for war
*Complex plans were formed to mobilize millions of soldiers
*Growth of massive armies and navies
*Russia, for example, had the most with 1.3 million men

~ ALLIANCES ~
*Danger and rivality came up because of the alliances, There were two different blocks:

TRIPLE ALLIANCE
-Germany
-Italy
-Austria-Hungary

TRIPLE ENTENTE
-France
-Grand Britain
-Russia

Short-term cause:

*Assassination of Sarajevo

-Serbia wanted a larger independent state
-Austria-Hungary wanted to prevent that form happening because they liked it better all under one rule
-Archduke Francis Ferdinand was the heir of the Austria-Hungary state
-He was assassinated by a Serbian called Gavrilo Princip
-The Austro-hungarian estate didn't know if Serbia was directly involved in the crime but it didn't care.
-Before calling war on Serbia, they make an alliance with Germany, which will support the Austro-hungarian nation no matter what.
-They call war and Russia, allied with Serbia mobilizes troops.
-Germany asks them to stop within 12 hours
-They ignore the signal so Germany declares war on Russia

*Germans used the Shlieffen Plan : fighting a two front war on France and Russia

-France is defeated and Germans move eat of Russia
-Great britain, defending France, declares war on Germany
-All great powers of Europe come to war

Nice post Helena! Smile These notes are perfect incase we have a test on World War I. Well, here are some facts I found on the internet about World War I:
- Germans were the first to use flamethrowers in WWI.
- German flamethrowers could throw flames up to 130 feet .
- More than 65 million men from 30 countries fought in WWI.
- The Allies lost about 6 million soldiers.
- Over 15 million mean died and 20 million were wounded.
- Two out of three deaths were caused by military battle, the other was caused by diseases.
- The Spanish flu caused about one-third of total military deaths.
- Russia had the largest army in the war.
- British tanks were initially categorized into “males” and “females.” The male tankers carried canons, while the female tankers carried heavy machine guns.
- Rittmeister von Richthofen was a very successful fighter. He shot down about 80 planes, which was more than any other fighter in the war.
