first Punic war

1st Punic war: 264 BC
These wars were called Punic because the Carthaginians are in origin Phoenician (punicus in Latin). Rome’s first territorial conquest outside of Italy was Carthage in Africa. Rome wanted Carthage, because they were their biggest threat, and they controlled a big amount of land in North Africa, southern Spain and the three major islands of Italy. Since Carthage controlled Sicily, they had a good source of food and their population was growing fasted and stronger. Carthage’s navy was a major threat. It controlled commercial trade in the Mediterranean and impeded trade at sea for Rome.

The First step occurred when Rome invaded Sicily, in 264 B.C. For this, Rome built a navy that had gangplank to hook on to the enemy’s boat and fight by hand. This is the cause why Rome was able to defeat the strong navy of Carthage. When the Carthaginians lost the battle, they were forced to sing the Island of Sicily to Rome and that became the first province of Rome. Rome passed from the Republic to the empire. A rebellion breaks out and Rome takes control of Sardinia around 238 B.C. and it became the second province of Rome. Soon Rome conquered Corsica and had all Italian territory under their hands.

Great job Martha! The Romans were extremely smart and I really wonder how they came up with that ingenious idea to build the 'gangplanks' for the ships. These bridges were what allowed them to board enemy ships and destroy them face to face, granting access to the success in the first war.

Rome was ot as powerful before the conquered Carthage. They Did not start the war. They were requested to protect part of sicily. This lead to the start of the first Punic War. They fought hard and won the first punic war and becmae very powerful.

The Romans were super smart to invent the gangplanks, it was a good way to get into the other ship and attack. This is what made the Carthginians loose the first punic war.

It is incredible how after the punic wars Rome changed so much. The first punic war was the start of that change.
