King Philip II of Spain

Post  maddie on Mon Nov 05, 2012 10:53 am

King Philip ruled Spain during the peak of its golden ages. Philip was the leader of the Catholic Reformation and was devoted to battle Protestantism. Philip loved books and because of this Spanish literature flourished during his reign. Philip had great success in the Europeans wars against the Ottoman Turks, especially at the battle of Lepanto in 1571. Philip conquered portugal in 1578. But Philip also had his failures. His cautious, methodical work habits slowed his government; the war against the rebellions in the Netherlands dragged on for years; and the defeat of his invincible armada during the Anglo-Spanish war was a loss of epic proportions.

Yes, the armada being destroyed was an unbelievable defeat for the spanish. Queen elizabeths intelect overcame the mass power of the Spanish. Elizabeths England fought strategically in a somewhat narrow area and attacked at all angles, destroying the ships, mind you everyone had cannons, but the Englishfiring from both sides defeated the armada.
