Genghis Khan, or Temujin, was the founder and emperor of the Mongol Empire. The empire became the largest contiguous empire in history. He gained his power by uniting many nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia. After founding the Mongol Empire he changed his name from Temujin to Genghis Khan. He started to invade other territories and that resulted in the conquest of most of Eurasia.

When Temujin was born, legend says that Tem├╝jin was born with a blood clot grasped in his fist, a sign that he was destined to become a great leader. He was the third oldest son of his father, who was a major chief in their tribe. Temujin had many unfortunate events during his childhood. For one, his father had been poisoned by a neighboring tribe and soon died because of the poison. Temujin's mother was then forced to raise her children alone, and then because of the death of his father, their tribe slowly broke up. Temujin was also engaged to a young girl from another tribe, and then continued to marry her at the age of sixteen. Unfortunately, she was kidnapped by the Merkits.

Temujin was very tolerant religiously, and had great interest in learning philosophical and moral lessons from other religions. He consulted Buddhist monks, Muslims, Christian missionaries, and the Taoist monk, Qiu Chuji.

At the time of Genghis Khan's death, the Mongol Empire had stretched from the Caspian Sea to the Sea of Japan. The empire's expansion continued on for another generation or so after Khan's death.
