Around the World- Magallanes and Elcano

Post  mzazo on Sun Sep 18, 2011 9:35 pm

Fernando de Magallanes was a Spanish sailor who was the first person to go around the world. This amazing journey started in the southern tip of Spain, Gibraltar; crosses the whole Atlantic Ocean until the North of Brazil and went into the Amazon River thinking it was the path to the Pacific Ocean because the mouth of the Amazon is 100 kilometers long, so there was no way of differenciating it fro the ocean. As he realiized they were forced to come back. Then continued on south to Port Segu“o, Brazil, now-days the city of Vitoria, Brazil; continued through the coast of South America to Rio de Janeiro; then went on south to Sao Paolo, Brazil; and on to Montevideo, Uruguay; then to Buenos Aires Argentina, thinking it was the correct route to the pacific, but then noticed that they had tripped with the same rock so they continued on through the southern coast of South America until a Straight between the southern tip of Argentina and Chile and what they now call La Tierra del Fuego, and went through it into the pacific ocean all the way until the Philippines. Here Fernando Magallanes got in a dispute with an Indian and got shot in the eye with a rock. 3 days later he died of the infection. The "co- captain" Juan Sebastian Elcano, continued on with the crew ship. He went from the Philippines to the northwestern coast of Australia crossed the whole Indian ocean until the southern coast of Africa (South Africa) in the Costa de Nueva Esperanza. Continued on to the Eastern coast of Africa Until Southern coast of Spain, Gibraltar, and back to where they started. Throughout this amazing journey Fernando Magallanes“ crew collected many species (which were super expensive in Europe) and other products that Europe lacked. At the end of their Trip Many suffered from a deadly disease called "El Escorbuto", which happens when lack of fresh food in the organism like fruit of vegetables or recent meat. They had to eat dried up meat in order to survive in their long trips without contact with land which they could get all these provisions.

it must have been a challenge going on this voyage because of everything they went through. Traveling and then noticing that its a river an having to turn back was probably very deceiving.

Scurvy was a disease that people got from lack of vitamin c. this disease was not a fun way to die, first you would get a bunch of spots on your body, then your teeth would start to fall out, then you would just drop dead. thank god for modern advances!

This was a huge mission for Magallanes and Elcano because, many diseases like scurvy that out spread in the voyage by the lack of vitamin C. This was for sure a very nasty disease to get you would get a lot of spots on your body like boils and loss of teeth.
