Germanic Kingdoms

Post  Marielly Martinez on Fri Mar 11, 2011 9:45 am

Germanic tribes that migrated across Europe were farmers and herders. They had no written laws, they lived in small communities. the only time they elected kings, was to lead them in war. Their culture differed from those of the Romans. The Franks was the strongest kingdom to emerge. Clovis, king of the Franks, conquered the former Roaman province of Gaul. When Clovis became Christian he earned peoples support and gained powerfull ally in Christian church. Across the mediterranean a new religion emerged, Islam. It appeared in Arabia, 622. There Muslims, and believers ofr Islam created a huge empire and a new civilization. European Christian were shocked when Muslim armies overrran their lands from Palestine to North Africa to Spain. In 723, Christian warriors triumphed. Muslims adavanced no farther into western Europe, they continued ruling most of Spain. For Christians muslim presence was a source of anxiety. In time medieval Europeans would learn much from Muslims, whose learning was exceeded their own in many areas.
