The Putting Out System

Post  Mikal on Sun Feb 06, 2011 10:23 pm

The putting out system existed during the 15th century, but it was most used during the 17th and 18th century because it was more advanced. The putting out system was the first method to make clothing during the industrial revolution. This machine did not run on any fuel or coal and was very small. Workers could have a machine at their house which was very handy, because they didn't have to go to work. The workers would get all their materials to make clothing, like cotton, from merchants. All the supplies the workers needed were raw materials; materials that come straight out of the nature. The merchant would also bring the finished clothing to a marketplace, or bigger city so they could be sold.
The putting out system was quickly replaced by the Spinning Jenny. The Spinning Jenny was invented by James Hargreaves in 1764. This device was much handier because it could spin more than one thread at the time, unlike the putting out system that could only spin one thread at the time. As more inventions were invented machines got bigger and bigger, and faster and faster. The machines could not fit at some ones house anymore so specail houses were made for these machines known as the first factories.
I think it is really interesting how technology improved so quickly during this time. Everything was improved so much so that it would save a lot of time for the workers. And also the work that was first done by muscle was later done by machines. Really intersting how all of this happened so quickly. Twisted Evil

This process took way too long to make things during the industrial revolution, after machines came like the spinning jenny and even the water frame, many things improved, what they made was better quality, it was more efficient, and it reduce the amount of human labor needed! however there's always something you have to start out with.!

The putting out system was nice and simple. Although it was a much slower process than using techniques which came out in the future, it was better for the people's health and much easier on them since they didn't have to get to the factory and breathe in toxic fumes which were very harmful to peoples health.

This also led the first factories. Since all these new machines were to large to fit in individual houses, they were put in large sheds by rivers to utilize the flowing water. Over time these factories grew and became more complicated, and then BOOW, industrial Europe
