The September Massacres

Post  Reny P. on Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:54 am

In September 2nd, 1792, a group of citizens attacked the prisons in Paris. It all started when the Prussians army attacked France and overall, it lasted for five days. Rumors had spread all over Paris; that Prussians would gain support from Parisians, who secretly opposed the Revolution. In September 3rd and 4th, inflamed by radical propaganda, food shortages, and fear of rumors, the crowed broke into the prisons and attacked the prisoners, including the clergy, nobles, and priests. About 1200 prisoners were killed, that's about half of the population in Paris at that time! In the Bicetre prison half the prisoners killed were minors, as in under 18 years of age.

some people refer to the attackers as a blood-thirsty mob; others call them patriots. As September began, news that Prussia had invaded France reached Paris. Many rumors about contra-revolutionaries, especially priests, allying with the Prussians to defeat the revolution circulated around the city, So parisians were angry and stormed into prisons were they killed many nobles and clergy, and even some prisoner who were not involved got murdered. They say that the people who stormed that prisons even drank the blood of the prisoners. It was a horrid event.
