Governing city-states

Post  Marielly Martinez on Fri Dec 03, 2010 9:58 am

After 750 B.C. the Greeks evolved a polis (Unique version of city state). The city was built on two levels: hilltop and flatter ground. On the hilltop stood the acropolis (high city) with great marbles temples dedicated to gods and goddesses. On flatter ground stood walled city with marketplace, theater, public building and homes. Since the population of each city-state was very small that helped citizens share responsibility for its triumphs and defeats. Between 750 B.C. and 500 B.C, Greeks evolved different forms of government: Monarchy, Aristocracy and Oligarchy. A monarchy was in which god and goddesses exercised central power. In time the government was changing and it was when they won power for themselves they became aristocracy (rule by landholding elite). From this kind of government it still kept on changing and when they came to dominating some city-states they became oligarchy (power in the hand of a small, powerful elite, from the business class. By about 650 B.C. iron weapons replaced bronze. Since iron was the cheapest ordinary citizens could afford iron helmets, shields and swords. A new method of fighting emerged. The phalanx, massive formation of heavily armed foot soldiers. They created as strong sense of unity among citizen-soldiers and required long hours of drill.

This arangement of the empire was a good idea. It slowed the enemies down before they could reach the Palace. The changes they made were very smart and effective like the when they replaced there armor with Iron instead of bronze. These little things made a huge difference. Overall Good POst Marielly
