Reality of the D.R ignorance.
In the last few decades the Dominican Republic has been ruled democratically unlike before where there were many Comunist Presidents. The freedom in general has been over used by the overwealming majority of the government official in the sense that they steal more than they spend, and they harm more than they help. As Most of you have probably seen and experienced in the days of elections Candidates are very kind and promesing they will beter society and help out in all that is needed but in the end you see not even 90 percent of what they say. The president of this country currently is very well known in latin America because all of his outside views are very impresive, he has a very good reputation and treats other countries very well, but in reality we all wish he would do the same things with his country. Our public schools are in extremely bad conditions, but no one cares, so the government goes ahead and builds a metro in the capital of the country using 600 million dollar, which could be used to build universitys, schools, appropriate medical centers ect... It is very unfortunate the way that the vast majority of the population is persuaded and attracted by the beuty of the unnessesary thing being built because of their igonorance, while thousand of people are starving and in need of education.

This is all true. The government takes advantage of us and lies to all of us promising new and greater things for the country. Leonel should realize how many people starve and don't have shelter to protect them. Sickneses are killing people everyday, and he doesn't do anything dramatically about it. He should focus in our problems before facing other countries problems. We are in trouble...

I think you make a very important point when you talk about the need of a proper school system in the Dominican. To get a proper education on this island you need to be able to afford to pay for private school due to the lacking public school system, but how can people afford to send their children to school when the majority of the population can barely afford to feed their family? Something needs to be done about this. Great topic though!

well part of what you are saying is true, but Leoner had done things to make education better. the government is paying more money to the teachers that work in public schools and it has make shools much better, he is putting more attention to education more then all the president that had ruled the Dominican Republic. but it is steel sad that the goverment put more money in things are not that important and not to things that are important. but the best president that had worked the mos for education is Leoner fernandez!!!

Re: Reality of the D.R ignorance.
I agree with Nathan. The condition the public school's are in is terrible. If someone wants a better education for their kids, they have to put them in private schools. The problem is most families have more than one child, so they might have the money to put one kid, but not the others, which is unfair. But this is not just a recent problem, the Dominican Republic has been struggling with its educational system for a long time and it will take more than just one president to change it.
And ebeli just because Leonel is raising the salaries of the teachers doesn't mean that the the schools are improving. Instead of raising their salaries he could focus in making the school more presentable, like fixing the bathrooms(most of them are in degradable conditions), buying white boards for the school, new chairs..etc.

AGREED! 600 million dollars on a metro? Seriously? When the schools and hospitals are in the conditions they are in?! Let's be serious now. Then the blame is always put on the people when we should be looking and pointing fingers at the authority. Gian is right. People are attracted by the beauty of nonsense. Does that really matter. What good is it making for the DR population? What is being done to enhance schools and universities.. things that will actually be needed in life!

That's distressing! I'd like to see the money used towards the people! I'd rather see a million people fed and educated than a million pretty buildings. Do people not see the state that the country is in? People should care! they are being selfish, the children should be educated so they can grow up and lead the country in a good, honest way. If they all get bad education they are going to grow up and be corrupt and lead the country the wrong way. As the common saying states: children, really are th future! I really can't understand how people don't care, they should. If they don't do something about it this place can't get better, it will only get worse. Education is extremely important and so is feeding the hungry and getting proper medical care. This is just awful.
